MIDDLEBURY - Daniel Eugene Evans, 77, of Middlebury died Aug. 25, 2000, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center [Vermont]. He was born on July 21, 1923, in Youngstown, Ohio, son of Daniel and Belinda (Vogelsang) Evans. He graduated from the Rayen School in Youngstown and earned his bachelor's of art degree in French and Russian from Oberlin College. Mr. Evans served during World War II in naval intelligence. After military service he earned his masters of art degree in Slavic philology from Harvard University. He also did graduate work at the University of Aurich in Switzerland. He was married to Margaret Leslie Sisman in 1978. Mr. Evans taught Latin, French and German at the Brown Military Academy in San Diego, Calif. He owned the Evans Book Store in LaJolla, Calif., for 18 years. After selling the book store, he worked for 2 ½ years in the special collections department of the Central Library at the University of California in San Diego, where he indexed the Hill Pacific Voyage Collection. Mr. Evans was also a former director of the Bottom Shelf Book Store, operated by the Friends of the Library in Fallbrook, Calif. Survivors include several cousins. He was predeceased by his wife. A private burial service will be held in the Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Addison County Humane Society, 66 Boardman St., Middlebury, 05753.
