John Fisher '"Jack" Hutsel [1943]


On December 25, 2003, John Fisher '"Jack" Hutsel passed away in his sleep at home.

Jack was a World War II Army Veteran who was awarded two Purple Hearts, Silver Star, and Bronze Star. He was a Sergeant at the time of being severely injured in The Battle of the Bulge, losing his left arm.

He was a third generation resident of Point Loma who attended Point Loma High and Brown Military Academy.

After the war, he attended San Diego State, joining the Epsilon Eta fraternity and, in 1949, founded the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapter at State. He later earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

He was a successful businessman and owner of the Hutsel Insurance Agency, which specialized in helping military members, churches, and others who often found it difficult to find insurance.

Jack mostly enjoyed giving back to the community and was active in many civic endeavors including serving for several years on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce and serving as its Treasurer.

He helped to establish the Sheltered Workshops of San Diego which provided job training and support to handicapped individuals. He was also its President for two years.

He was an avid sailor and was a member of the Mission Bay Yacht Club for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gloria; three children and a grandchild.
